“Th’ Ego Song”

Song by Ray Charles

Appears on

1950: 78rpm A-side

Ray Charles could hardly believe his good fortune. As he brags in wonder on his August 1950 song “Th’ Ego Song”,

all the girls in town are crazy about me
… if I had my way I’d marry them all!

On this song, which was released on a 78 with “Late In The Evening Blues”, Ray hadn’t quite found his original voice yet. He sings and plays great, of course; he always did that. But he is crooning a tad more goofily than he needs to, and even the sentiment doesn’t quite fit his persona. In the song, he already has one special girl and doesn’t need all that attention from the others. Awww!

“Th’ Ego Song” is fun and charged up by its peppy brass combo, not exactly pure, undistilled Ray but a marvel in its own way.
