“Ellie, My Love”

Song by Ray Charles

Ray Charles had a big hit in Japan with a cover of “Ellie, My Love” in 1989. Originally a hit for Japanese pop band Southern All Stars in 1979 as “Itoshi No Ellie”, Ray’s English-language version featured in a television commercial in 1988. As a single it became the top-selling song by a foreign artist in Japan in 1989, not a bad achievement for Ray, then aged 59. With pained, delicate vocals Ray sings of his beloved “Ellie, my love, so sweet”; the music is in a light, synth-y ballad style. It’s not the deepest song the Genius ever recorded but it is touching in its own emotional way. “Ellie, My Love” was added to the LP Would You Believe? in 1990.
