“Cherry”

“Cherry” is a song about a girl named Cherry. Ray Charles covered the song for his 1961 album Dedicated To You, where every song is a woman’s name. “Cherry” is mid-tempo and pretty. Sweet, even, which is apt since Ray’s tender, lamenting vocals bemoan Cherry, who unfortunately isn’t sweet as her name. Soft strings and an angelic choir add to the sense of pity: why can’t you be this sweet, Cherry?

The best part of “Cherry”, without a doubt, is its final seconds when Ray, after a particularly drawn-out and falsetto rendering of the title girl’s name, suddenly breaks the musky-molasses rhythm of the song and spits out “I’ll get you yet!” super fast. Look out Cherry – Brother Ray has his eye on you and it’s twinkling.
