“All Night Long”

Song by Ray Charles

1965: Together Again

“All Night Long” is a song from Ray’s 1965 album Together Again. The supposed country number’s most noticeable trait is the high, piercing strings that dance overhead. Ray takes care of the vocals unshowily underneath it all.

As a singer, Ray is more understated on “All Night Long”. The slow, bleary, minor-key song is hypnotic thanks to those strings and Ray seems to not want to get in the way. But while his voice is restrained, it’s hard. Ray seems down and he figures the song will just have to take care of itself.

“All Night Long” is short, under three minutes, but a highlight of the album it’s on due to its spooky melodies, sleepy pace, and Ray Charles’ aggrieved near-absentia.
